A bit of attention through the year goes a long way with gutters.

Clear Them at Least Once a Year
Autumn is the main time to clear gutters after the leaves have fallen. Spring matters too. Winter debris settles and compacts through the cold months. If trees hang over your roofline, twice a year is the safer option.
Know the Warning Signs
Water pouring over the front of the gutter during rain is the most obvious one. But also look for paint peeling off fascia boards, damp patches on ceilings near the roofline and green staining on walls below the gutter line. These are all signs the water is going somewhere it should not.
Do Not Leave a Sagging Section
A gutter that has dropped away from the fascia board is not draining properly. Water sits in that low point and spills onto the wall or the ground directly below. The longer it is left the worse the damage gets to the board behind it.
Watch the Downpipe After Heavy Rain
Go outside during or after a heavy downpour and look at the downpipe. Water coming out of a joint halfway down or pooling at the base in the wrong spot means a blockage is already forming somewhere in the pipe.
Keep the Ground Around Downpipes Clear
Downpipes discharge at ground level or into a drain. If leaves and debris pile up around the base, water cannot get away properly. It backs up into the pipe and eventually causes a blockage higher up.
