UPVC windows are popular for a good reason. They are tough, they last for years, and they do not need painting or treating the way old timber frames did. But low maintenance does not mean no maintenance. Left completely alone, UPVC frames go dull and grey, pick up green algae along the edges, and collect grime in every groove, while the glass turns grubby and streaky. The good news is that keeping them looking smart is easy once you know how. In this complete guide I will walk you through how to clean your UPVC windows and frames the right way, what to avoid, and how to keep them looking as good as the day they went in.
Why UPVC Needs Regular Cleaning
UPVC is built to cope with the weather, but it is still out in it all day, every day. Rain, dust, pollution, and damp all leave their mark over time. The frames have a slightly textured surface and plenty of grooves and recesses, and dirt settles into all of those spots and bonds there if it is never cleaned off.
In our damp climate, algae and mould also take hold along the edges and in the corners, giving white frames that tell tale green or grey tinge. Leave it long enough and the staining works into the surface, where it is far harder to shift. A little regular cleaning stops all of that and keeps the frames bright. It also means you spot any small problems, like a loose seal or a stiff hinge, long before they turn into something bigger.
What You Will Need
You do not need anything fancy. A bucket of warm water with a small squirt of washing up liquid, a couple of soft microfibre cloths, and a soft brush for the grooves will handle most of the job. For tougher marks, a cleaner made specially for UPVC is worth having. For the glass, a proper glass cleaner or a simple mix of water and white vinegar works well.
Just as important is what you should not use, and I will come to that shortly, but for now keep the scouring pads and bleach well away.
How to Clean UPVC Window Frames
Start with the frames, before the glass, so any dirt you loosen does not end up on clean glass later.
First, brush or wipe away the loose dirt, dust, and cobwebs from the frame and the sill. Getting the dry debris off first means you are not just smearing it around once things get wet.
Next, dip a soft cloth in your warm soapy water and wipe down the whole frame. If you’re carrying out Windows & Frames Cleaning Services, work along the flat surfaces and then into the detail. The corners, grooves, and edges where the frame meets the glass are where grime hides, so use your soft brush to gently reach those spots.
Do not forget the drainage holes along the bottom of the frame. These little slots let rainwater escape, and they clog up with dirt and dead flies over time. A clear poke with the brush keeps them working as they should.
Rinse the frame with clean water and dry it off with a fresh cloth to leave it bright and streak free. If some marks will not budge with soapy water, this is where a dedicated UPVC cleaner comes in. Apply it with a soft cloth, following the instructions, and never reach for anything abrasive.
Give the rubber seals and gaskets a gentle wipe too, as they collect grime and can harden if they are neglected. A soft, damp cloth is all they need.

How to Clean the Glass
With the frames done, move on to the glass. Spray on your glass cleaner, or your water and vinegar mix, and wipe it over the pane.
The trick to streak free glass is the two cloth method. Use one cloth to clean and lift the dirt, then go over the glass again with a second dry microfibre cloth to buff it clear. That second pass is what gets rid of the smears that a single wipe leaves behind. Clean on a dull day rather than in bright sun, as sunshine dries the cleaner too fast and causes streaks.
Looking After the Moving Parts
A window is more than its frame and glass. The hinges, locks, and handles all need a little care to keep working smoothly. Wipe them down when you clean, and every so often add a little lubricant to the hinges and moving parts so they do not stiffen up or seize. A handle that is starting to feel stiff is often just asking for a clean and a drop of oil.
Keeping those drainage slots clear, as I mentioned earlier, also protects the window, because blocked drainage lets water sit in the frame where you really do not want it.
What to Avoid
This part matters just as much as the cleaning itself, because the wrong approach causes damage you cannot undo.
Never use abrasive pads, wire wool, or scouring creams on UPVC. They scratch the surface, and once it is scratched it looks dull and actually grabs dirt and stains faster from then on.
Keep bleach, white spirit, and harsh solvents away from the frames too. They can discolour the plastic, leaving yellow or faded patches that do not come out. And despite what you might think, a pressure washer is not a good idea on window frames, as the force can drive water past the seals and into the window itself.
The simple rule is that gently does it. Soft clothes, mild cleaners, and a bit of patience beat harsh scrubbing every time.
How Often to Clean, and Restoring Tired Frames
As a rough guide, giving the glass a clean once a month and the frames a proper going over a few times a year keeps everything looking sharp. Homes near busy roads or lots of trees may need it a little more often than that.
Sometimes, though, frames have been left too long. Years of algae, traffic grime, and oxidation leave them grey, dull, and stained in a way that normal washing just will not fix. The good news is that even frames like this can usually be brought back to life. A proper restorative clean using the right treatments and a gentle soft wash lifts the deep staining and returns the frames to a bright, clean white, without the harsh scrubbing that would damage them. It is remarkable how much younger a house can look once the frames are restored.
